THE COMMERCIAL AWARD

The Requirements

  • Based upon the Disabilities Discrimination Act of 1995 (UK) the site must:
    • take reasonable steps to change a practice which makes it unreasonably difficult for disabled people to make use of its services.
    • for people with visual impairments or hearing disabilities, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include accessible websites.
  • Must have a main focus on either products or services to public
    E.g. Online Stores and Service Providers (E.g Broadband, Insurance, Web Hosting, News)
  • Must conform to W3C WAI 'A' standard of web accessibility:
    • Provide equivalent alternatives to auditory and visual content.
    • Don't rely on color alone.
    • Use markup and style sheets and do so properly.
    • Clarify natural language usage.
    • Create tables that transform gracefully.
    • Ensure that pages featuring new technologies transform gracefully.
    • Ensure user control of time-sensitive content changes.
    • Ensure direct accessibility of embedded user interfaces.
    • Design for device-independence.
    • Use interim solutions.
    • Use W3C technologies and guidelines.
    • Provide context and orientation information.
    • Provide clear navigation mechanisms.
    • Ensure that documents are clear and simple.
